The Hardline According to Danny & the Dinosaur
CD
There's a children's book called Danny & the Dinosaur in which a kid conjures to life a dinosaur from the natural history museum, and this new Al Larsen (Some Velvet Sidewalk, Sandy Dirt, Melting Igloo) album takes it's basic idea - that the world can be transformed through imagination and force of will - and puts it to the test.
I mean, if the future is going to work out in our favor can we just start living that way now? If we're going to all be in the same room together will it help if we admit we're breathing each other's air?
All this utopian zeal gets crammed into songs that draw on decades of minimalist outsider music - echoes of Tuxedomoon, Suicide, Red Krayola, Giorno Poetry Systems, Half Japanese. Sometimes it's all stripped down, not much more than a voice and a thread of music in an empty parking lot at midnight. Sometimes it's all layered up with piano and drums swimming in reverb and the majesty of wandering around late at night excited by city lights. At the center of it all are songs, lyrics, a voice looking for signs of a new world in the here and now.
Produced by Steve Fisk and featuring Don Blair on the real moonlight drums. 5" x 5" custom letterpress packaging printed at Community Print.

Ship to Shore
CD EP
In the Fall of 1994 the City of Glasgow brought Al Larsen to Scotland on a three-month artist residency to collaborate with love rock legends The Pastels. During this time Al toured around the UK as a guest guitarist in The Pastels and also as an opening act. They played shows with Movietone, Cornershop and Comet Gain. There was some shuffling around cafes with Eugene Kelly (Vaselines, Eugenius) and members of Stereolab too. A date with Beck ended in a stitched-up scalp. Yay for socialized medicine! This 5-song EP is one of the tangible products of that time. US release on K records. Two-color cd sleeve designed by Aggi.

Appetite for Extinction Vol 2
CD-R
Al Larsen (Some Velvet Sidewalk) has returned to the home recording lab to create from the other side of youth, grief and confusion. Using a raw, direct-to-digital sound as an advantage, this bristles with lock-step sequenced acoustic guitars, organ levels in the red, sounds of rain and storms, and glass cities with buildings transparent. If Al's trademark vocal style sounds like a matter of life or death, the lyrics do, too: an acorn dreams of her life as an oak only to know she'll be soil before long; boys stand on a floating dock in a storm waiting, hoping, to be pitched into the waves; planting a crocus bulb as an act of faith. Ten song CD packaged in a 10" x 10" custom letterpressed cover.
