During this period some velvet sidewalk was Al Larsen, Martin Bernier, Don Blair and Paul Schuster. Paul played keyboards and we were doing songs from a lot of different albums but mostly the stuff that appears on the generate! lp and the lowdown e.p. Probably my favorite part of this time was playing 'Hope' - sort of the apotheosis of the Iggy and the Stooges go to College theme we'd been running for some time - all anger and bluster turned inside-out. When we recorded it with Paul playing distorted keyboard and Arrington on L.A. Blues-style free-sax honking there wasn't much else to say on the matter. The other favorite song we were doing then was called "Clearhead". It started off with kind of a look around at the wind in the trees and the sun slowly passing overhead, then, of course, it would sort of explode. For the first time in a long time I was shouting about something good for a change - my cleared head and increased clarity. The music was good too, a groove with good dynamics and all two chords. Ahhh - clarity! We never recorded it in a studio, though there is as good a performance as we ever could have recorded on a Yo Yo a Go Go live compilation. "Hope don't hurt me now... hope don't desert me now!" |
